Preparing Your Big Green Egg for Spring in Destin, Florida

A Big Green Egg will last you a lifetime; especially if you maintain it well. Along Northwest Florida from 30A to Destin, homeowners are ready to cook outdoors and enjoy the beautiful springtime weather.  Before you fire up your Big Green Egg, its a good idea to conduct a spring cleaning and a review of the grill parts. To follow are some of the maintenance tips recommended by the experts at Big Green Egg.

CLEAN BASE  DOME

Start by cleaning the outside of the ceramic base and dome. Use soapy water and some green soap. This is easier if the EGG is still slightly warm. Maintain the inside of the dome by occasionally brushing it with a wire brush (or grit 80 sandpaper).

LUBRICATE METAL & CAST IRON PARTS

Keep the metal parts of the EGG, particularly the hinge and draft door, in optimum condition by spraying them with WD-40 or a silicon spray a few times a year.

If your EGG has a dual function metal top, treat this fairly regularly with a vegetable oil. Caution: do not use olive oil for this purpose. The successor to the dual function metal top, the rEGGulator , has a special rust-preventative coating.

STAINLESS STEEL GRID

It is easiest to clean the grid when it is still slightly warm. The Dual Brush Grid Scrubber is the best tool for the job. After scrubbing, just rub it with a wad of paper. I always store my EGG immediately after using it, if I am not in the mood for cleaning. When I fire it up the next time, I clean the grid as soon as it starts heating up. This takes no time at all, and cooking on the EGG is so much better without any leftovers stuck to the grid.

REVIEW FELT GASKET / REPLACE IF WORN

Over time, you’ll need to replace the felt gasket between the ceramic lid and the ceramic base, as the felt protects the ceramic well and prevents ‘false air’.  You can easily replace the felt using the Gasket Kit, a #13 wrench, a utility knife or putty knife, a piece of cloth or a scouring pad.

CLEAN THE REGGULATOR

The rEGGulator is a patented air regulator and the successor to the dual function metal top. It is made from durable cast iron and has a silicon handle. The rEGGulator also contains a rust-preventative coating. You can best maintain the rEGGulator by covering your EGG after use, once it has cooled down. If your rEGGulator starts looking a bit dull as time passes, rub on some Crisco or vegetable oil, such as peanut oil. Ideally, you should do this when the rEGGulator is still slightly warm.
