Marcia Blake, a leading authority on home décor and merchandising manager for Sunbrella fabrics, will present an accredited continuing education course on Design Using Color Theory, Textiles & Light to Create Healthful Lifestyle Settings for professional interior designers and anyone interested in color and design. The seminar will be held at Bay Breeze Patio in Miramar Beach across from Seascape on July 11 at 10 a.m.

During her presentation, “Design Using Textiles & Light to Create Healthful Lifestyle Settings,” Blake will discuss how design can be influenced by fabrics and light. Outdoor fabrics, such as the Sunbrella brand, have changed dramatically in look and feel over the past several years. The goal of the presentation is to help interior designers gain a better understanding of how design can be influenced by color, fabric and light and to show what is possible both inside and outside of the home.

The one-hour course carries a CEU value of 0.1 and has been accredited by the IDCEC Interior Design Continuing Education Council for Members of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers), IDC (Interior Designers of Canada) and IIDA (International Interior Design Association).

Outdoor Furniture Trends Embrace Style, Comfort and Functionality

Enhancing the patio, backyard or deck has been a growing trend in home improvement over the past few years. Improvements make the backyard more enjoyable for homeowners while adding value to the home. All signs indicate that outdoor living will continue to grow in popularity as families continue to seek ways to bring the comfort and function of indoors outside.

With the start of the new year, many homeowners are thinking about renovating their outdoor living space in preparation for spring and summer fun. If you’re in this category, you may be considering following the latest trends and designs for outdoor furniture and outdoor living. After years in the business and attending the International Casual Furniture Market in Chicago, here is what we are seeing:

Composite –Composite is made up of 100% resin, and at one time was just Adirondack Chairs. Today, Composite is everything from Adirondacks to dining to cushioned deep seating and chaise lounges. This trend is one of the fastest growing in the U.S. Most manufacturers are offering warranties of 20 years minimum. At the Beach, Composite can be the most practical choice, while their wood counter parts often last only a few years in harsh coastal environments before needing repainting. At Bay Breeze Patio, we stock three manufacturers in composite and they produce 52 different colors among them. With warranties from 20 years to lifetime, Composite can make life even easier on the coast.

Teak is back with a vengeance. Teak was almost dormant but it is back. Straight Teak, Teak mixed with Sling Fabric, Teak Accents on Aluminum or Outdoor Wicker — it does not matter. Teak that is harvested the right way – from FSC forests – is making its way into all kinds of furniture manufacturers. While Teak still requires a lot of work to keep its natural color, it speaks to the organic trends that are so prevalent today.

Mixed Media – Combining materials has been an ongoing trend for a few years. Whether it’s combining outdoor wicker with wood, cast aluminum with wicker, composite with sling, or brushed stainless steel with wood, the options are endless. There are many ways to combine materials to take a piece of furniture and achieve many different looks and styles. Fully-upholstered furniture for the outdoors was soaring a few years back and has slowed due to the maintenance involved in keeping the fabric clean outdoors. This year’s trend is embracing upholstered furniture mixed with other materials to accomplish an organic feel with less work.

Sectionals – Sectionals started trending about five years ago but have really come into their own in the last two years. Every manufacturer we work with has found a way to turn existing lines into sectional lines. Sectionals are all about space and coziness. While Outdoor Wicker is the material of choice, we are starting to see more aluminum, wood and composite sectionals. Sectionals provide the ultimate gathering spot.

Spring is blooming! Time for spring cleaning of patio furniture.

Spring is in full bloom and with it comes a blanket of pollen, covering up your comfort. It is time for spring cleaning

How to clean outdoor fabrics?

Fabrics such as Sunbrella^® fabrics are engineered to withstand outdoor elements with the highest level of design and performance. For easy cleaning of durable fabrics follow these steps:

Brush off loose dirt.
Spray on a cleaning solution made of water and mild soap.
Use a soft bristle brush to clean.
Allow cleaning solution to soak into the fabric.
Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
Air dry.

To remove mildew from fabrics, soak a sponge in a solution of 1/2 cup borax dissolved in 2 cups hot water, and rub it into the affected areas. Let it soak in for several hours until the stain disappears, then rinse well. For Sunbrella^® fabrics, you can use ¼ dish soap, 1 cup bleach with 1 gallon of water. Rinse well.

2015 Eggs on the Beach Raises $23,000 for Fisher House of the Emerald Coast

We’re excited to announced that the second annual Eggs On the Beach EggFest barbecue competition raised $23,000 for the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast. Held at Seascape Resort on Sept. 26, we welcomed more than 500 tasters and volunteers who sampled an array of delicacies presented by 25 cook teams.

The second annual event exceeded our expectations. We are so grateful for the overwhelming support from our cook teams, sponsors, volunteers and tasters who came out for the fun afternoon. The funds raised help the Fisher House provided added assistance to many military families.

The Fisher House of the Emerald Coast provides a home away from home for military families during medical treatment. Within steps of the Eglin Air Force Base Hospital and Veteran’s Clinic, the Fisher House’s 12 guest suites and a caring staff provide lodging, basic needs and support to active and retired military when they need it most. In 2014, Fisher House of the Emerald Coast served 690 guests and has already served more than 600 guests this year.

Kim Henderson, executive director of the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast, recently said, “we rely on community donations to be able to assist families staying at the Fisher House and we are extremely grateful of the monies raised at Eggs on the Beach. In 2014, we expanded our reach to not only be able to assist those families, but also help local military families who unexpectedly experienced a medical crisis with no Fisher House close by to assist them.”

In addition, the Emerald Coast Theatre Company received $500 and a Mini-Max Big Green Egg by earning second place “People’s Choice” award and the most votes among the non-profit cook teams. With the mission to enrich and entertain the Emerald Coast Community through professional and educational theater, the Emerald Coast Theatre Company will be auctioning off their prize Mini-Max at the upcoming Lip Sync Battle, Oct. 29 at the Hilton Sandestin. Emerald Coast Theatre Company was among some of the area’s leading non-profits, including Food For Thought, Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation, Rotary Club of Destin, Fisher House of the Emerald Coast and Air Commando Association Foundation, whose volunteers were cooking and serving their favorite recipes to build awareness for these important causes.

The top “People’s Choice” award and judges award winner was Team InDyne for their smoked brisket grilled cheese and smoked tomato soup, earning the team a trophy and large Big Green Egg. “People’s Choice” runner up was team Snorri’s Tandoori who presented chicken tandoori prepared on the Big Green Egg.

Winners Announced for 2nd Annual Eggs on the Beach EggFest BBQ Competition

The InDyne Cook Team was the big winner at the Second Annual Eggs on the Beach BBQ Competition, taking both the Judges Award and People’s Choice Award. Presented by Bay Breeze Patio, Eggs on the Beach celebrated foods cooked on the Big Green Egg.

More than 25 cook teams competed, presenting their best recipes, on a beautiful Saturday at Seascape Resort. Emerald Coast Theatre Company earned second place for People’s Choice and was the highest ranking non-profit team, earning $500 toward their cause. In third place, Snorri’s Tandoori were competing on behalf of the Air Commando Association Foundation and earned recognition for Snorri’s popular ethnic dish prepared on the Big Green Egg.

Judges Award & People’s Choice Award: Team InDyne

The InDyne Cook Team was the “People’s Choice” winner in 2014 and returned, proving they had not lost their edge. Team members, Christopher Brown, David Hobbs, Dana Cail and Michael Pare, tried dozens of dishes before agreeing upon a grilled cheese brisket with side of smoked tomato soup. The dish, the ultimate “comfort food,” was a crowd pleaser, earning People’s Choice Grand Prize—a large Big Green Egg as well as the Grand Champion Trophy from the Celebrity Judges.

People’s Choice 2nd Place & Non-profit Team Winner: Emerald Coast Theatre Company

Emerald Coast Theatre Company showed their involvement was no act. Cook team members, Nathanael Fisher, Sherry Londe, Tom Graham and five time cooking champion Dr. Mendy Graham, worked as a team to present an elaborate, flavorful stuffed jalapeno dish. The jalapeno boat was topped with granny smith apple and Gouda cheese as well as slow smoked pulled pork marinated in Dr. Graham’s homemade sweet BBQ sauce. The dish was grilled to perfection on the Big Green Egg and then drizzled with sauce and sprinkled with Gold Dust (Dr. Graham’s own BBQ rub). Tasters could then enhance flavors by adding more of the homemade sauces, choosing from Sweet Smokey, Hot Smokey, Rebelicious (vinegar based), or Liquid Gold (mustard based).

People’s Choice Award Runner Up: Snorri’s Tandoori

The Snorri’s Tandoori cook team included Nic Dezinski, Michael Agin, Joseph DeCarlis and Snorri Gislason who presented Snorri’s backyard favorite, Tandoori. Snoori regularly makes Tandoori in his backyard on the Big Green Egg and friends and neighbors agree the dish is divine. The Indian dish, which is wildly popular in South Asia and the Middle East, consists of roasted chicken prepared with yogurt and spices.

All proceeds from Eggs on the Beach will benefit the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast. Located on Eglin Air Force Base, the Fisher House provides a “home away from home” for military families so the family can be together during treatment for serious illness or physical/occupational therapy.

Dr. BBQ to Attend 2015 Eggs on the Beach Egg Fest BBQ Competition, Sept. 26

We’re excited to announce that Ray Lampe, better known as “Dr. BBQ”, will be our featured celebrity guest at the 2^nd Annual Eggs on the Beach BBQ Competition coming to Seascape Resort on Sept. 26, 2015. A chef, author, and a familiar face on many popular cooking shows, Dr. BBQ frequently serves as an expert judge on the Food Network’s “Chopped,” NBC’s “Food Fighters,” and the Travel Channel’s “American Grilled,” among others. As the Big Green Egg’s spokeschef, Lampe is an expert at cooking foods on the Big Green Egg smoker/grill.

Lampe has authored eight cookbooks, including his recently published title, “Flavorize.” He has cooked and medaled in over 300 BBQ contests, and in 2014, he was inducted into the “BBQ Hall of Fame.” He is currently writing his ninth cookbook and traveling the country as Big Green Egg spokeschef.

Lampe, who has also appeared on HGTV, CNN, Martha Stewart Living and The Howard Stern Show, will be on hand offer expert advice, serve as a celebrity judge and autograph copies of his new cookbook, “Flavorize.”

The 2^nd Annual Eggs on the Beach BBQ Competition will feature tastings by more than 25 cook teams, grilling and product demonstrations, live music by Chris Alvarado, cash bar with beer, wine and sodas, “People’s Choice Awards,” silent auction, chances for prizes, kids’ activities and more. All proceeds from Eggs on the Beach benefit Fisher House of the Emerald Coast located on Eglin Air Force Base.

Registration Fees Waived for Non-Profit Cook Teams at Eggs on the Beach, Sept. 26

We’re excited to be hosting the second annual “Eggs on the Beach” EggFest Grilling Competition on Sept. 26, 2015 at Seascape Resort in Miramar Beach. Back by popular demand, we are inviting non-profit organizations to register a cook team and registration fees will be waived. As an added incentive, the non-profit team with the most “People’s Choice” votes will receive a $500 donation to their charity.

The non-profit category was a great success last year. Non-profit organizations were able to share information about their cause with tasters and the winning non-profit, the Emerald Coast Autism Center, enjoyed a $500 donation.

Our goal is make Eggs on the Beach the most cook friendly competition and to support the local community. Proceeds from Eggs on the Beach Egg Fest will benefit the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast. Located on Eglin Air Force Base, Fisher House provides a “home away from home” for military families to be together during treatment for serious illness or physical and/or occupational therapy.

The EggFest draws people who are passionate about cooking and smoking foods on the Big Green Egg, an all-in-one smoker and grill. The day is filled with tasty samples from more than 25 cook teams with attendees voting on their favorites. The winning team takes home a large Big Green Egg and the winning charity receives a $500 donation. Grilling demonstrations, live music by Chris Alvarado, and kids’ activities ensure the event fun for the entire family.

Bay Breeze Patio provides a large or extra-large Demo Big Green Egg for each team to cook on as well as provides lump charcoal, a fire starter, 6-foot table, tent, paper plates, plastic utensils, napkins and toothpicks. Teams simply bring their favorite recipes and their own ingredients.

Registration Open for 2nd Annual “Eggs On the Beach” Egg Fest, Sept. 26

We’re pleased to announce registration is open for the Second Annual “Eggs on the Beach” EggFest BBQ Competition taking place on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Seascape Resort in Miramar Beach. As one of the official Big Green Egg Festivals held around the country, Eggs on the Beach will be a delicious afternoon for the entire family, featuring a cooking competition, “People’s Choice Awards”, tastings, live music and children’s activities.

Cook team registration is now open and taster tickets are available online. Each team of up to four is given a large or extra-large Big Green Egg to use during the competition. Teams purchase their own ingredients. We provide the lump charcoal, fire starter, table, tent, paper plates, plastic utensils, napkins and toothpicks. Cook teams create bite size portions of their favorite recipes to be judged by the public. Tasters vote for their favorites, as teams vie for bragging rights and prizes, including the grand prize, a brand new large Big Green Egg.

We’re encouraging EggHeads, master grillers, backyard grillers, and everyone in between to join the fun and register a cook team. Our goal is create the most fun, cook-friendly and taster-friendly BBQ competition in the region while giving back to our local community.

In addition, drawing tickets may be purchased for a chance to win a Big Green Egg and other items donated by area businesses with these proceeds also benefiting the Fisher House. Last year, the event raised $9,100 for the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast and we want to exceed that for 2015!
